Lesson:
LMS Prompt to begin lesson: Since your class has now completed the research and narrative pieces, we are going to learn how to use Photostory to build the digital product. I will demonstrate how to use the program and each of the features you will be expected to complete in the final project. At your desk is a handout that you can use to follow along and then after class as a reference as you complete your project.

  1. Standing in the front of the room, using a computer attached to a smart board, open the Photostory application.
  2. Have students follow along; asking them to log into their computer and open the Photostory application.
  3. Click to choose “Begin a New Story”, and then click “Next” at the bottom of the window. Explain that this window is where they will make changes to their video story.
  4. Click Import Pictures and demonstrate how to follow the prompts to locate and upload the images students have chosen to use.
  5. Point out how the images will be placed in a filmstrip along the bottom of the program window. Demonstrate the ability for students to click and drag photos into a different order if they choose. Demonstrate how to remove the black borders, rotate images and do simple photo editing.
  6. Show students how to choose the arrow to navigate between images in the strip.
  7. Demonstrate saving by choosing Save Project. Emphasize they should save their project often.
  8. Demonstrate choosing Next.
  9. Demonstrate to students how to add text to each image by entering text in the text window to the right of the image. Explain and demonstrate editing options include the ability to change font, style and alignment. Demonstrate this is also where effects to the slide can be created.
  10. Show how to choose Next to continue adding text to each image slide. Remind students save their work frequently.
  11. Demonstrate how to record the voice-over (narrative) after showing students how to attach the microphone to the PC. Select an image to record narration. Click on the red record sound button. Begin speaking. Click the stop button when done with text for the slide. If acceptable, have students repeat this procedure with each slide, recording text appropriate for each image.

  15. In remaining time, allow students to begin work on their project, informing them they will have the opportunity to return to the lab to complete the project.

End Product:
Students will have the knowledge to create a 4 minute digital narrative using Photostory.

Assessment:
Students will complete an Exit Slip upon completion of the demonstration lesson in order to evaluate student needs.
